The Simple View of Reading is an information-processing model from Philip Gough that presents a bottom-up view of reading acquisition. The model prescribes that the combination of word recognition and language comprehension are necessary to promote reading comprehension. The Simple View of Reading serves as one of the grounding models for the Science of Reading

The Simple View of Reading would later influence the five pillars of reading. The five pillars of reading were put out by the National Reading Panel in 2000. This also has a heavy impact on the Science of Reading.

Orton-Gillingham practices are used for students with dyslexia and reading difficulties. However, they are shown to be best practices for all students. The multisensory teaching approach allows students to use multi-modal methods for learning.
